GEORGETOWN, Guyana (CMC) – Georgetown, Guyana’s capital city, is the nerve centre of sexual assaults, accounting for more than 60 per cent of such attacks for the first half of this year.

According to figures provided by Ann Greene, outgoing chief probation and welfare officer of the Human Services and Social Security Ministry, of the 50 reported rape cases, 30 of them were executed in the capital alone.

Green disclosed that of the six reported gang rapes, four occurred in the city and on average there were five rape cases in Georgetown per month.

Minibus drivers and their conductors are the chief rape offenders. The official sex crime figures also show that rape is more prevalent among teenaged girls than older women in the 216,000 square mile republic.
