Voice of Guyana International - Rice farmers to get $2 million in aid for floods

Rice farmers to get $2 million in aid for floods

December 26th, 2005 § 2 comments

GEORGETOWN, Guyana (AP) – Guyanese farmers will receive $2 million in government aid after torrential rains killed 30 people and destroyed rice crops across the nation, the president said.
The money will be paid out according to the amount of acres a farmer owns or leases, President Bharrat Jagdeo told the government information News Agency on Saturday.
Large parts of coastal Guyana were flooded when 60 inches (152 centimeters) of rain fell between December 26, 2004, and mid-January.
More than 30 people died, most from lepto spirosis, or jungle fever caused by broken skin coming into contact with contaminated water.

“The last rice production was very small, and I want to see a larger production for the next season so I have set aside the money, ” Jagdeo said.

Rice ranks third in economic importance after sugar and gold.
