Guyanese Citizenship - am I eligible?

June 1st, 2006  |  Published in News & Sports  |  40 Comments

The Constitution and laws of Guyana provide for the acquisition of Guyanese citizenship by four means:

Birth
Descent
Naturalisation and
Registration

A person is a Guyanese citizen if he/she is born in Guyana . Such person is eligible for a Republic of Guyana passport and all other privileges given to any Guyanese.

A person born outside of Guyana is a citizen of Guyana at the date of his birth if at that date his father or his mother is a citizen of Guyana. Such persons are not required to meet residency requirements; the birth must be registered by the parents as an overseas birth registration upon which the parents can apply for a Republic of Guyana passport for the child.

A person is eligible for Guyanese citizenship by naturalization and must show that he is ordinarily resident in Guyana and has been so resident throughout the period of five years immediately preceding his application, that he is of good character and that he intends to reside in Guyana. On approval, the person will be granted a Certificate of Naturalisation and will have to take the oath of allegiance to Guyana.

A person who marries a Guyanese citizen is also eligible to apply to be registered as a Guyanese citizen having met all the legal requirements i.e. having legally entered the country and having been legally in Guyana. Unlike persons applying for naturalization who must fulfill a specific number of years of residency, there is no such requirement in this case.

Persons can also apply to be registered as Guyanese citizens if they are citizens of a Commonwealth country as stated in the Constitution of Guyana or a citizen of the Republic of Ireland. The person must show that he has been ordinarily resident in Guyana or has been in the service of the Government of Guyana or has had partly such residence and partly such service, throughout the period of five years ending with the date of his application.

It should be noted that in the interests of national security or public policy, the Minister of Home Affairs may refuse to register or naturalise a person as a citizen of Guyana.

Guyanese citizenship cannot be obtained by any other means other than those stated above.
As such, persons are urged to be wary of internet schemers or any other fraudulent persons, who offer any other means of obtaining Guyanese citizenship and a Guyanese passport. It is advised that the Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration Support Services Section, be contacted for assistance with respect to any inquires on citizenship maters.

    Hello,

My mother is Guyanese (my father isn’t) and I was born in St. Lucia. I’m already 21. I would like to have the nationality if I am eligible. How do I get a guyanese passport without stepping foot in Guyana? I have family members there but I don’t want to bother them with admnistration hassels.

    Thanks in advance

    Lisa

Lisa from what we know, it is highly unlikely that you can LEGALLY acquire a Guyanese passport ‘without stepping foot in Guyana’ given your situation, but we suggest you contact the consulate.

    Hello,
My father was born in Guyana and whilst I was bought up in guyana from 2-8 was born in the UK. I go back to visit regularly and have decided this year to emmigrate to either Guyana or Barbados. I have been told that having a dual passport or dual citizenship along with my degree will help my son get into a goverment school and me get a job.

    What are my best options?

    Hi

I am a citizen of Guyana but I had acquired my residency in the United States. I recently lost all of my documents that would prove I am a legal resident of the U.S. How do I go about getting my social security card in additin to my passport, green card, etc.? Can I simply ask for a reissuing of these documents, and if so how do I go about doing that? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

vog: Ramin please read above again and do not send money to anyone. There is no LEGAL way of getting a Guyana passport unless you are granted citizenship through birth, parents, marriage or naturalisation. ANYTHING ELSE IS A SCAM. To visit Guyana you may need a visa. you can find the nearest embassy/consulate and talk to them http://voiceofguyana.com/2008/02/20/guyanas-diplomatic-consular-representatives/

    Hi.

I am an Indian national and would like to know if your government is offering any types of second passport through means of investment?

I have seen several people offering Guyana passport with the price tag of US$10,000~20,000. I would like to know if this is true.

I do not mind spending such a amount as it also entitles Visa Free Entry to many a countries.

Is it also possible to apply directly to the embassy? If so how long does it take.

I do not know anyone in Guyana.

    Please try and reply promptly.

    Regards,
    Robin.

If I marry a Guayanese, how long will it take to get a passport from Guayana?

  22. Voice of Guyana says:

    May 26th, 2008 at 12:20 pm (#)

Will: Once you get married and that goes through the process and is registered you then have to register to become a Guyanese citizen. Once that’s completed then you can apply for a passport.

Since all of those are handled by different agencies there is no way of saying how long it would take.

    Hi,

I am a St. Lucian, born of guyanese parentage, my mother was born in Linden. Last year I visited Guyana and fell in love with the country. I am now 33yrs of age and would like to seriously persue citizenship. Grateful if you could provide me with some guidance on this matter. I actually visited the immigration office in Guyana but was directed to Home Affairs office. I was successful in obtaining my mom’s birth certificate through the post office. Perhaps you can offer some further guidance?

    Appreciate it immensely.

vog: we’ll have a complete answer for you on Monday Ken
update: Ken well you went to the right place as you would have to be resident in Guyana at the time you apply and you will also have to take the oath of citizenship in Guyana as well. good luck and let us know if you have any other questions

    Hi there…

This must be quite and odd questions but here goes…..

I am a barbadian and want to marry my guyanese boyfriend….would that enable him residence in Barbados and what procedure would have to be undertaken

vog: Crystal from what we gather your boyfriend is legally entitled to enter Barbados once you’ve proven that you’re legally married and it’s just formalities before he can also become a citizen of Barbados. You would have to do that in Barbados of course which we are not familiar with how long, procedures etc. good luck and thanks for asking
