Calypso King THE MIGHTY SPARROW to perform at Bollywood Music Awards

The Mighty Sparrow, known as the “Calypso King of the World” and often referred to as the “Greatest Entertainer from the Caribbean” is going to create history  by performing for the first time in a Bollywood event: The Music Awards 2006. Mighty Sparrow, a household name with all West Indians, Calypso and Soca music lovers around the world is all set to set the stage on fire on Saturday, Nov 4th 2006 at the Trump Taj Mahal Casino, Atlantic City, New Jersey.

The Bollywood Music Awards 2006 will be the 7th annual gala event of international stature honoring the outstanding achievements of Indian music-Makers, singers, and musicians during the prior year. The Awards will be held on Saturday, Nov 4th 2006 at the world-famous Mark. G. Etess arena in the Trump Taj Mahal Casino, Atlantic City, New Jersey  where major artists from Britney Spears, Sting, Celine Dion, Jennifer Lopez, Mariah Carey to Shakira have performed.Over 15 Hottest Singers from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh & the Caribbean are going to set the stage on Fire at the Bollywood Music Awards 2006.

Recently, the Mighty Sparrow sang two chart-breaking songs for the upcoming international comedy feature film …”RAINBOW RAANI” which is truly historical.In addition to the Mighty Sparrow, the music team of the “Rainbows”, a Arkansas based group who created the music for “RAINBOW RAANI” will also be making their live performance debut at this musical extravaganza. The group got to work with legendary West Indian filmmaker Mickey Nivelli (formerly known as Harbance Kumar), producer Pradeep Samtani and Calypso King of the World, The Mighty Sparrow. The soundtrack of RAINBOW RAANI has already taken the entire West Indies by storm and will soon crossover to Canada, USA, UK, India and South Africa. The lead players of the band the “Rainbows” are Arnab Banerjee, Abin Thomas, Michael Allen and Andy Blume, who have already received great reviews on their work.

The Mighty Sparrow, affectionately dubbed, The Birdie is the unrivaled Calypso King of the World, with a career that spans over 40 years and counting. This artist par excellence has earned his rightful place as “King of the Calypso World” by defeating every other competitor/pretender to his throne. He has entertained audiences across the globe, including, the Caribbean, Europe, Asia, Africa, North and South America, to name but a few. The Mighy Sparrow was influenced by listening to American street quartets, pop tunes by Nat King Cole and Frankie Laine, Sarah Vaughn, Billy Eckstein, Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald with their jazz contributions, and the early calypsoes of Lord Melody, Lord Kitchener, Lord Christo, Lord Invader (of Rum and Coca Cola fame) and the Mighty Spoiler, to name a few.

At the tender age of 20, Sparrow emerged, as the leading Calypsonian with his record-breaking hit, Jean and Dinah. ( Yankees Gone, 1956 covered by Harry Belafonte). He also recorded Frank Sinatra’s My Way and Lucho Gatica’s “El Reloj”. The Mayor of Detroit, Coleman Young, also presented him with the keys to the city.

. In 1977, during FESTAC, in Nigeria, Sparrow received the honorary title of Chief of the Yorubas, (which is Chief Omo Wale of Ikoyi). Mayor Ed Koch of New York proclaimed March 18th, The Mighty Sparrow . The Mighty Sparrow has proved himself as the Quintessential Calypsonian, par excellence, with over seventy (70) albums to his credit.

 ”We were initially going to keep the surprise performance of the Mighty Sparrow but we were just to excited and honored that the Mighty Sparrow, a legend, will be not only be participating but performing  in this year’s Awards,” said Chairman of the Bollywood Music Awards, Kamal Dandona. 

The Bollywood Music Awards is hosted under the Bollywood Group which has had major stars and celebrities participate in our events e.g. Michael Jackson. Sharon Stone, Richard Gere, Jeane Claude Vandamme, Steven Seagal, David Hasselhoff, Tyra Banks etc.The front rows of these awards have been lined with virtually the entire Bollywood galaxy of stars (Shah Rukh Khan,Aishwarya Rai,Sanjay Dutt, Rani Mukerji, Bipasha Basu, Kareena Kapoor, etc.) 

Performers from India at the Bollywood Music Awards on Sat, Nov 4th 2006 are Kumar Sanu, Sukhwinder Singh, Kailash Kher,Babul Supriyo, Mika Singh,Indian Idol winner Sandeel Acharya and Indian Idol runner  up Karunya, Anooradha Sriram and Sophie.The performers from Pakistan are Amir Jamal and Shahida Mini and from the Caribbean are the Mighty Sparrow and Terry Gajraj. UK’s hottest the Sona Family and Bangladeshi’s Tanvir Shaheen will also perform.

The show will be hosted by popular VJ and the remix queen Sophie Choudhury with 17 dazzling performers.
