Simon and Shock International LLC confirms construction of State of the Art Sawmill in Linden, Guyana
Mill to be most advanced in Tropics
Simon & Shock international LLC (SSI) today confirmed its intention of building one of the worlds most advanced large-scale hardwood sawmills in Linden, Guyana. The construction of the milling complex, slated to start in the first quarter of 2008, will take an estimated 14 months to complete.SSI’s laser driven, computer controlled mill will achieve the highest recovery rates in the tropical lumber industry, with finished products accounting for 70-75% of total log volume. The company believes that sustainable forestry in the tropics is now entering a new phase that will extend beyond the forest and begin to be applied though the manufacturing process. With current recovery rates in tropical mills averaging between 30%-40% over half of every tree entering a mill ends up on the factory floor. By doubling the recovery rate though advanced technology, SSI’s mill will require half the log used by a typical mill to produce the same amount of product. This will have a direct effect on the forests in Guyana by reducing the pressure placed on them by a growing world demand for wood products.“We are very exited about bringing this advanced milling technology to Guyana” said SSI CEO Kelly Simon. “Sustainable 21st century tropical forestry will require 21st century technology, and we have chosen Guyana as the best place in the tropics to introduce this technology”.

The milling complex in Linden will also feature a full set of kilns powered by the waste generated in the milling process. “ We are using 100% of every log entering our facility to created value added products in Guyana,” said Mike Shock SSI’s President. “Our agreement with government does not permit the export of log from Guyana and that’s just fine with us. We are first and foremost a lumber company, and we’re in Guyana to produce lumber in as sustainable manner as humanly possible.”

Simon & Shock International is a private company based in South Haven, Michigan specializing in tropical hardwood lumber. The company has been doing business in Guyana since 2000.

what a bunch of crap. sustainablity…baloney.
this is just another ripoff of a poverty stricken country’s forest. why not eco-tourism and leave the forest intact. the amazon rainforest is the lungs of he world. all this will do is release more co2 and contribute to global warming and climate change. future generations will suffer immensely

can’t agree with you more db
don’t know that the best we can do is invite someone in to cut down the forest…the more things change…

Guyana, like every other country has the right to oxploit its forestry resources for the economic benifit of its people

I fully agree that trees removal must be done in a control manner in order to protect our invironment.

With approximately twenty of the more than one hundred timber tree specie known for commercial harvesting, sustainability in some timber cnocessions is achieved without planning given the sparseness in accurance of known timber specie.

I welcome SSI to Guyana.I am even hippier that the mill intends to put an end to the wastage traditional mills incur by low recovery.

We are meant to be an evolutionary end point so it is only right ppl like these lovely chaps are shortening our collective misery by helping causing a quick and painless extinction of man with many other little critters. Pat on the back.
